Ultra running athletes have not received any financial support from Athletics Ireland, the national athletics body. In recent years, the development of the sport to the highest international standards has been solely funded by Polar Running Adventures via sponsorship of UltraRunning Ireland international athletes and competitions.

Polar Running Adventures organises the North Pole Marathon and Antarctic Ice Marathon and is operated by Richard Donovan. His sponsorship has included financing the 2010 World 50km Trophy Final in Galway and the 2011 Trail World Championships in Connemara. Polar Running Adventures additionally financed the hosting of the 2009 Anglo Celtic Plate (Home Nations) 100km in Galway.
