Synopsis

Running is an inexpensive, convenient and increasingly popular sport, but some take it to the limit. From cold weather running in Alaska to the intense heat of the Sahara Marathon, a number of athletes choose to pit themselves against the elements. Extremes of environment, route and geography are another challenge, from trails through dense jungle to soaring mountain ranges. The rewards are the experiences of a lifetime, the sense of having been to largely unexplored places and the realisation of unique ambitions. Never before has there been a manual to pull together all the elements of this new, but fast growing sport. The book features over 150 stunning images and amusing, informative text.

Reviews

"Extreme Running is beautiful. From the top of the world to the bottom, it captures the "extremes" in foot races- from the hottest to the coldest, the wettest to the driest, the highest to the lowest. In addition, authors Kym McConnell and Dave Horsley capture the human spirit through the athletes' experiences."

"If you are a runner, adventure racer, ultrarunner, or interested in extreme events, this book is for you. I love this book. The book does a great job of showing you popular events and enough information. I have been to several of them and can attest to the descriptions as accurate."

"The authors, experienced ultra-runners themselves, have selected 24 extreme events on all seven continents, and the comprehensive route information, maps and contact details, plus sumptuous photography, make for an impressive package."

"I congratulate Kym McConnell and Dave Horsley on completing their own 7 Extreme Marathons on 7 Continents challenge and for producing this excellent reference book. The book superbly captures the essence of running in extremes and I am sure it will inspire many others to tackle similar goals."
