UltraRunning Ireland's Martin Rea made a successful return to ultra running when he won the London 50k on 20th February.
In perfect running conditions (9C), the field set off from Streatham Common on the Capital Ring trail that circumnavigates the English Capital using a network of footpaths, parks and canals.
Ireland's Rea and Scotland's Craig Stewart quickly set the pace and led the elite runners from start to finish to smash the course record by 5 minutes. They finished side by side at Wembley to share the victory ahead of Sweden's Johannes Erixon who had been with the leaders up to 40km.
It was Rea's first ultra race in over 2 years after taking a break from the sport to concentrate on shorter events. A 7:21:42 100km runner, Rea is looking forward to the IAU World Trail Championships which will take place in Ireland this summer.
The men's top 3 were:
1st Martin Rea and Craig Stewart 3:42:01
3rd Johannes Erixon 3:52:01
