In order for athletes' performances to be recognised both nationally and internationally an ultramarathon race must have an International Association of Ultra Runners (IAU) label.
On 6th November 2010, the IAU Council confirmed the position that recognised member federations such as UltraRunning Ireland are the relevant decision makers in the application process for each country.
It is important to note that an Athletics Ireland permit is not sufficient for an ultramarathon race to be recognised both nationally and internationally: UltraRunning Ireland (the recognised national ultrarunning association) must endorse an IAU label application.
UltraRunning Ireland encourages all standard distance events in particular to apply for a URI Licence as the necessary step to obtain an IAU label for their races.
