Ultrarunning and the IAAF

Is there a formal relationship between ultrarunning and the IAAF?

Yes. The relationship between ultrarunning and the IAAF is as follows:

The International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) is officially recognised by the IAAF as the governing body for ultrarunning worldwide. In a similar fashion, the IAAF recognises the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) as the controlling body for international mountain running competition.

The IAU currently has 50 members and develops the sport of ultrarunning under the patronage of the IAAF. Included among the 50 members is UltraRunning Ireland, which is formally recognised as the independent governing authority for Ireland.
